Profile

I am an aspiring wood scientist passionate about wood, tree, and forest, mixed with data science, coding, and blogging.

Hello! My name is Hanifah Mahdiyanti, but I’m usually called Hani (read: honey).

I do research about wood in many kinds of forms. Wood chemistry, wood quality control, and wood degradation are my main work. But due to my internship and training, I am also interested in the wood supply chain.

I care about forests, wildlife, conservation, the environment, energy, eco-friendly materials, and recycling.

Education

I am a student of nature as I learn about foresty and agriculture which enable me to gain the degree of Bachelor of Forestry in Universitas Gadjah Mada (Indonesia) and Master of Agricultural Sciences in Nagoya University (Japan). Now, I am a second-year PhD student at the same university where I pursued my master’s degree. I am a long live learner of nature.

Internships

I did my internship at Andeco, Ltd., a startup company of an architect consultant in Osaka, Japan, during the summer holiday of my master’s degree program in 2019. My job was mainly doing market research on wood supply chain, import procedures, and wood traceability systems in South East Asian countries.

Before this, I also did an apprenticeship in CV. Limase Laras an exporter furniture company in Bantul, Indonesia. I built a company website, managed a company booth in an expo/exhibition (JIFFINA – Jogja International Furniture & Craft Fair Indonesia) in 2016, and mainly learned about furniture exports business and SVLK (Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu – The Indonesian Timber Legality Assurance System) certification.

Hobbies

I am a cat person and very much enjoy watching cat videos. I like reading novels in physical, digital, and audiobooks. I write reviews about the books I read and content about books in my book blog. Yes, I started blogging when I was in high school, and still trying to write continuously.

I also enjoy listening to podcasts and audiobooks while working. The podcasts I listened to are mostly about true crimes, sciences, research, horror stories, and books. Oh, I also love crocheting and knitting (still learning).

My favorite places to visit when traveling are outdoor places such as the mountains, botanical gardens, and parks. But, I also love visiting indoor places like museums, castles, or any historical places. I usually take pictures of the trees and birds when traveling.
